images #52/53 from the book; forty years ago I was dissecting a first settlement dwelling, covered by 5 different styles of finition; part of my work, being the owner and worker (architect on leave), was to excavate delicately all around the stone foundations as it is well known, that in those primary times, settlers would dump refuse right along the walls; remember, indians, english navy etc plus winter attacks; you did not stray far from the fire.
