Eileen P. Goldenberg Bio
“Art is a concrete result of the artist’s subtle feelings” Agnes Martin
I was born in Brooklyn, New York. My parents didn’t really encourage me to pursue being an artist, but I Ignored them and continued in my practice of making art. I went to the Brooklyn Museum Art School (sadly gone now) when I was in junior high school and continued taking art and photography classes in high school. College was NYU School of Design and then Alfred University, where I studied Ceramics, and received a BFA in Art. Iowa was my next destination for graduate school, where I attended the University of Iowa and received an MA and MFA in Photography. In 1980 I moved to San Francisco, where I live today with Judith, my wife of 21 years and dog, Lobos. Over the years I have developed a system for painting. This system allows me to have a foundation to begin, and then gives me the freedom to veer off in new and exciting directions. Encaustic is the perfect medium for me, creating translucent layers and the conduit that carries my ideas. Some of my concepts are investigating the triggers that initiate memories and how are often affected by the changing characteristics of the living spaces and streets we once inhabited. The newest series, Dwelling, is somewhat structured, and has boundaries that surround shapes that began as streets on maps where I have lived. Very early in the morning I sketch and draw, creating as many variations as I can think of before I begin to paint. Color is vital and has always has an emotional place in my work, and I use it innately, choosing colors that correspond to how I feel each day. I seek to find the pure meaning of painting, as it neither represents nor references any reality outside of the work. This lack of signifiers, this primeval sense of painting, allows the viewer to dive into the piece and experience it emotionally, without the clouding of subject or metaphor. In 2007 I received a grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission, this resulted a One Woman shows with my Tea House paintings. I have also received grants in 2012, from the Creative Capacity Fund in San Francisco. I am one of the original founders and past president of International-Encaustic- Artists.org. Currently I am represented by Hall Spassov Gallery, Bellevue, WA., and The Grand Hand in Napa, CA.
