A chapbook has traditionally been defined as literature consisting chiefly of small pamphlets of popular tales, ballads, children’s stories, religious tracts, political tracts, nursery rhymes, folk tales, almanacs, and poetry. These small crude book initially came into use in the 1600 and 1700s and gradually disappeared in the mid to late 1800s.
The Chapbook has come back into use as a means for artists to share their work whether through the written word or the visual arts. The Adumbratio Chapbooks for purchase here are small bound books of images from larger bodies of work. Adumbratio is latin for “sketch” and in these books are a small collection of images created in a more intimate presentation from larger projects.
