Linda Mary Montano: 14 Years of Living Art

Exploring and dissolving the boundaries between art and life, a seminal figure in contemporary feminist performance art, Linda Mary Montano investigates the relationship between art and life through intricate, life-altering ceremonies, some of which last for seven or more years. She is interested in the way artistic ritual, often staged as individual interactions or collaborative workshops, can be used to alter and enhance a person’s life and to create the opportunity for focus on spiritual energy states and the cessation of art/life boundaries. This period of 14 Years of Living Art documents Linda's exploration during 1984-1998 each year focused on the energies and attributes of a particular chakra, each year a different chakra, from her base, the Art/Life Institute in Saugerties, NY, and her art-life counseling sessions with the public at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.
