My "Halfway Home" series started as a documentation of post-industrial structures and environments close to my home, Eldred, New York. I always gravitated to these decrepit settings and felt it necessary to photograph them. I produce these photographs with a 4x5 view camera and color film. The imagery depicts remnants of a forgotten culture that now lacks agency because it has been superseded by technological advancement. As I continued to produce this imagery, I became fascinated with how this decaying climate affects its surrounding inhabitants. The people who live here are generally rugged blue-collar men who believe your worth is built by the sweat of your brow. These men work extensive hours performing manual labor in the idea of obtaining the “good life,” yet are crippled by the functionality of their immediate environment. The work is an exploration of the psychological machinations between person and place, specifically as it pertains to where I grew up.
