John Rosewall utilizes both analog and digital processes to create the intimately scaled abstract works that are featured in this exhibit. They are studio creations, made by directing colored light onto small, reflective sculptures, photographing the results on film, and processing the images extensively in Photoshop. Rosewall treats each digital file as a virtual canvas. Each image becomes the site for a series of actions—performed on the mousepad and realized in the circuits of the computer—during which color, shape and texture are mined for their power to evoke moods or trigger associations, in the manner of abstract painting. Each work explores the potentialities of new technology and provides a case study in how photography can be made to operate non-photographically.
