Having grown up in a suburb, but obsessed with the variety and texture of cities, and looking for a college in his native Canada, Robert Pinchin selected Hamilton, Ontario, a post-industrial city that shares a latitude and a complex history with US rust-belt cities like Flint, Rochester, and Lackawanna. Unlike some other urbanists and new topographers who favor technique and composition over emotion, Pinchin finds in his photography the purest way to capture the feelings that his discovered scenes evoke. Each of his carefully crafted compositions brings with it an atmosphere and a memory. Pinchin’s technical excellence and painterly sense of color and design combine with his unique sense of place to give life to images in which there is not a single person to be found. In every frame, however, it’s easy to see that there is, nevertheless, a presence. It is the artist himself.
