Epic Antarctica chronicles a month-long journey along Western Antarctica, starting from Ushuaia, Argentina and ending in Dunedin, New Zealand on the National Geographic Endurance. While the Antarctic Peninsula is full of wildlife and research stations, visiting it is much like visiting only New York City and thinking you’ve seen North America. Antarctica is ice, wind, water, and waves with life teeming in the sea. Other than a few Emperor Penguin nesting sites, penguins live in the subantarctic islands near South America and New Zealand and on the barren shores of the Antarctic Peninsula and Cape Adare. Once you go beyond the Antarctic Circle and head west, the landscape changes. Penguins disappear and ice shelves and huge icebergs come into view. The ship crunches through sea ice. Ice floes float by with the occasional lone Emperor penguin or leopard seal. The sun never sets. It’s truly magical.
