Many years ago I was astounded when a mushroom pushed up through our newly paved asphalt driveway. In her book “Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teaching of Plants”, Robin Wall Kimmerer notes that puhpowee is the Potawatomi word for “the force which causes mushrooms to push up from the earth overnight.” There is no equivalent in English.
A couple of summers ago I was enchanted by a toadstool that appeared in the woods after a rainy day. Every year in my lawn, toadstools appear but last only a day or two before they disintegrate.
Lately I have been trying to capture at least some of the mystery of these amazing creatures in photographs. Here are some of my favorites - enjoy.
