DFRNT (Different) was a production alias that I used for a number of years. Since leaving University in 2005, I had been trying to make music, and it wasn’t until I discovered dubstep (in its original form) that I felt like I had a genre that I could really grow with.
Dubstep felt like my “punk” music. It felt like it made production accessible, and it allowed me to grow and develop as the sound of dubstep evolved.
I took a deeper and more introspective path to the sound, and so was always associated more with “chillstep” or “deep dubstep” sounds, but my sound grew to include all sorts of styles from ambient, through house, breaks, UK garage and drum & bass.
This publication is a look back at DFRNT, so that I can remember and reminisce about that period of my life.
