"Self Made" is a celebration of Newark's Black women entrepreneurs. Filled with vibrant images by photographer Tinnetta Bell, it profiles nine women who own a range of small businesses in the city's South and West Wards, where economic recovery has been slower than other parts of Newark. It also includes stories on the history of Black women entrepreneurs in America; the decade-plus rise of businesses owned by Black women; and advice on entrepreneurship. "Self Made" showcases the potential and strength of Newark communities that are rarely portrayed in a positive light. It is valuable historical and artistic document that captures a pivotal moment in Newark history, before the COVID-19 pandemic began in March of 2020. Proceeds benefit SHE Wins Inc, a non-profit that cultivates the potential of Newark girls.
