Religion always teaches us 'to do this' & 'to do that'. In that, if our merit karma is unfolding, things happen according to our will, which makes us believe that our religious practice has paid off. On the other hand if our demerit karma is unfolding, things go against our will, which makes us believe that something must be lacking in our religious practice & that we should put in more efforts. In this way we are caught in the mud of doership which takes us away from the path of salvation. Only the one who has realized the Self, who is egoless, can free us from the 'intent of doership'. Only after this we can experience the state of being natural & spontaneous. Where there is slighest amount of doership there is worldly interaction & as soon as doership ends path to salvation begins. Penance, sacrifice, meditation all involves doership and believing that 'I am doer' is itself ignorance. Where there is knowledge of Self one experiences non-doership & spontaneity!
