A year of tumultuous politics and a very divided public have pushed many women artists in Michigan to action. For this collection, artists were invited to fill one page with image and text to show what they’ve been doing as a form of resistance over this past year. After the Women’s March on Washington, D.C. women spoke out about pressing issues from health care to Black Lives Matter, immigration, gun violence, education and the legal attack on a woman’s right to protect her own body. Public dialogue took such a violent turn that many women looked for peace and understanding, a stabilizing position women have traditionally taken, one that we need now more than ever. Three organizations collaborated on this book: the Women’s Caucus for Art, Michigan Chapter, the Ann Arbor Women Artists, and the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptures. Works by several un-affiliated artists are represented as well.
